Second chances

Life is the greatest teacher and we are continuously in the process of learning all that this teacher has to offer. This priceless education that mirrors our being , shaping our attitudes & bringing our personalities is a think bank of life’s experiences lived by us in the name of our relationships.

Come across a sad person and the words come out of our mouth ” something dreadful must have happened to him” , a bitter lover blames it as ” she broke my heart “, an old couple in an old ages home & the words are ” children these days are thankless & ungrateful “. All the life’s experiences lived day in & day out through our relationships thereby defining our identity.

In this matrix of life, we play by rules that we have defined for ourselves & the web entangles us with our relationships in a dance that can go from slow to whirling motions . we hurt each other & we get hurt in the process . Our needs make way for our desires & wants , thereby the rules & the equations getting altered. Someone who didnot have our attention today becomes the centre of attention tomorrow, somebody most important in our lives slips on priority & makes way for another relationship gaining more weight age in our lives.

We swear by things & proclaim our ground rules . We hear ourselves say the words ..” if it ever happened to me ..I won’t forgive the person” & then .. life puts us face to face with our claims & we fail the litmus test of our own philosophy . We Forgive.. try to forget the hurt & the pain .. we analyse it with the loss being unbearable & then happen the second chances ..we lead ourselves into believing it isn’t happening to us .. this is a bump in the road ..we will get past this & emerge stronger in the second innings of second chances.

To Believe in second chances is all good .. forgiveness is divine, but then who are we fooling around with here .. we didnot give the second chance to the other person here .. we gave it to us .. we didnot forgive , we are trying to save us the pain by still wanting to believe .. we cannot forget ever …but , we block the memory of hurt & pain.. the deception & lies ring true in our ears but.. we shut out the sound.

Self Preservation ..the most primitive yet, the strongest of the human survival traits.. an inbuilt programme & second chances just became an extension of that skill sets. We cannot bear the pain & donot have the courage to loose the important relationships of our life .. & we have gone ahead & saved our face by naming them second chances .

As long as we manage to fool everyone around… the night comes calling & haunting the thinking mind .. did I forget ..? can I ever …? is this worth it ? … yes .. all that is true .. but it deserves a second chance .. I deserve a second chance ..& in the quiet of the night .. we admit to us .. it is actually me ..whom I have given the second chance. once .. the truth settles down with us .. it becomes easier moving forward in the direction of our choice. Whatever the decision… it us for us & not in the favor of the other one. Second Chances .. to any relationship are the chances that we give to the most important relationship which is the one we have with only us.

The cold side of moon

Prologue

I push my way through the crowd of students swarming in the hallway. I hate in between classes when you have to rush to your next class and others seems to be taking their time. I walk past a couple who are busily flirting while walking through the hallway. I automatically made face. Can’t they do their thing somewhere else ?

I continued running up the third floor for my next class. I have to get there before my faculty does . Richa Ma’am doesn’t tolerate tardiness and I don’t want to go to the Students club just to get an excuse slip.

I am about to turn to the hallway when someone grabbed my arm.

“Hey,”

I look up to a smiling pair of black eyes.

“Hey,” I greeted back.

“Going to your next class?” He asked.

“Yup. You?”

“We’re getting lunch,”

I glanced at the girl beside him . He is protectively holding her hand with his left while his right is holding her books. We’re about the same age but she’s a fourth year now, same course as me. I am slightly taller than her but she has the body. She’s beautiful with her long curly hair . His girlfriend politely smiled at me and I did the same.

“Okay,” I turned back to Luke. “See you around.”

“Take care,” he said before they went down the stairs.

I know I should start walking to the other way but I just stood there and watched them walk away. I watched him walk away with her. I watched him walk away with a piece of me, I cannot name.

He’s the guy next door I never knew and I didn’t care, not that I care about a lot of things. He’s the guy I only smile at but never really talked to. But you see, we are humans. All we ever yearn for is to be cared, to be loved, to be someone. But we often look for it in the wrong places. That’s why we are often left broken.

He was a nobody but that night when I saw stars on a moonless sky, I found myself in the wrong love story.

What is it like to watch the GAME OF THRONES on “Indian TV “📺

  1. I am not a huge fan of gore , so when GoT frenzy was taking over the world , I resisted . But the ubiquitous excitement for the sixth installment of the fantasy series made me wonder ( and feel a little left out )what the fuss is all about . So i started watching re-runs on TV . And these are the difference you will feel after some Censor-ing for Indian TV .
  2. All the characters seem to overreact: The show is still shocking with it’s cliffhangers and sudden, grisly deaths. But all the cuts take the edge off most iconic scenes. So you might be forgiven for thinking that Jaime Lannister overreacts when he pushes Bran Stark off the tower window- because unlike Bran , you don’t catch a glimpse of the queen’s incestuous relationship with her twin brother. The edited 5-second shot of the Lannister siblings cuddling may give you the impression that Cersei is having an asthma attack and her brother is comforting her.
  3. It makes you sharper:Each episode requires zen-like focus to put together the pieces. How else are you going to figure out how many dragons Daenerys has ? By counting them each time they appear! For in the morning-after scene, where Daenerys Targaryen becomes the Mother of Dragons, all you get to see is a close- cropped shot of her sooty face and neck with one tiny , red dragon croaking on her bare shoulder.
  4. This Disneyfied version shields you from horrors: Ramsay Bolton for one. His torture and castration of Theon Greyjoy is not all that horrifying (you deduce what happened when you see Ramsay eating a sausage later). You’re spared watching The Mountain gouging out Oberyn Martel’s eyes and crushing his skull. You remain blissfully unaware of the murder of Ros , the red haired prostitute . And also Jaime’s rape of Cersei next to the dead of their son Joffrey . If you watch GoT on TV , these things never happened for you.
  5. The subtitles are a Rubik’s cube for the mind :’ Sex ‘ is changed to ‘intercourse’ , ‘arse’ to ‘backside’ , ‘shit’ to ‘crap’ , ‘rape’ to ‘violate’. So….synonyms save our culture?
  6. You feel a deep gratitude for the Internet to make sense of the plotlines.Or , you’d still be left wondering what Melisandre gave birth to in the cave.

When Death fell in Love with life !

A form–seemingly a man with black hair, black eyes and pale skin wrapped in a black robe–threaded his way through the cold floor of the Dark Forest. Not a brave soul is crazy enough to walk near this forest, let alone enter its dark abode. Perhaps that is why it was named such, because of its thick canopy which hides the forest from both the warm sun or the full moon. Even then, life still finds its way in spite of the darkness. There are leaves brushing his feet as he walks by and the sound of crickets can be heard from a distance. He can feel savage animals lurking around him but never coming any closer. If he was human, they would have already shredded him to pieces, with nothing but blood and bones left. But they kept clear of him– afraid. Like how humans feared the dark. Like how everyone feared him–Death.

His name is an idea everyone abhors but can never run away from. Even the richest person ever lived tried to buy his way out of it but Death is not something anyone can buy or haggle with. Death will come uninvitedly to the most unexpected person. Like lightning– leaving everything until only Death remains.

He stopped when he saw a little girl, about eight years old, crying in the middle of the forest. She is kneeling on the ground, her dress drenched in mud, her hair in disarray. Either she’s in bad luck for getting lost in the dark forest or lucky for being alive until now. But then, she still has to die.

Erina Lionheart–the last person on his list.

He strode to her and stopped right in front of her kneeling form. Finally, he is at the end of his century old journey. After he takes her life, he can finally rest, without souls to fetch, without a list to complete. Death took a deep breath to relish the moment. After a long, long time, he can finally stop being Death.

The little girl looked up at him. Her teary green orbs looking directly at his black ones. She didn’t look at him with fear, nor with anticipation. She only looked at him with relief. Like he’s her knight in shining armor whom she has been waiting for a very long time. Her innocence veiled her perception of him– Not seeing him as Death but as a savior. She stood up and ran to him but before she can touch his robe, he moved out of her way, making her fall to the ground. She stood again and ran after him, trying to get hold of him. Death moved out of her way every time, not letting her touch his robe.

Even he cannot tell why he’s preventing her from touching him. Isn’t that the reason why he’s here? To let her touch him. To take away her life. So he can finally take her off his list. So he can finally rest. But the way her eyes looked at him without angst, without judgment– a pure innocence…

He cannot take her life.

He leads her out of the forest. Not close enough to touch him and not far enough to let the wild animals pounce on her. She followed him quietly, still sniffing from previously crying.

He stopped at the end of the forest, a grassy clearing in front of him. The full moon is peeking through the clouds above them, the midnight dew sparkling from its light. The girl stopped beside him, wiping her tears at the hem of her dress. He turned to her just in time to see her face brightened with glee upon seeing the fireflies swarming above the grass.

Death has never seen life like this before. He had always known humans as selfish and greedy. They hold on to life, willingly sacrificing other people for their sake. They cannot let go of it because they are aware that they cannot take their riches to the grave. But this girl, she has nothing to lose. Life itself has forsaken her and her only path leads to death. Yet she continues to glow with life. He then realized–being alive has nothing to do with breathing or beating hearts. Some people die even before Death comes knocking at their door. Living is state of being–not a mere existence.

He leads her to the nipa hut sitting in the middle of the clearing, the grass turning to ash under his feet. The girl followed him, skipping over the trail of ashes he left. He knocked at the door before disappearing into thin air, leaving the girl outside as a woman opened the door. The nipa hut is a home to a young couple who just lost a child to a miscarriage. At their grief, they received a gift: her. They took her in and raised her as their own.

But then Death never left her side, watching her from the Dark Forest. Her blonde hair growing beautifully down her hips. Her pink lips becoming fuller through the years. She has grown taller. She has grown beautifully. She has turned into a woman.

“Hi!”

Death frowned down at her. She has wandered too far from their house, leading her to the edge of the Dark Forest where he is resting on a branch of a tree.

“I’m Erina,” she said, her green eyes sparkling with life–like it did years ago. “What’s your name?”

“Death,” he answered. He expected her to run. She is not a child anymore. Surely, her innocence is not as pure as before.

“Death,” she whispered with a grin as if tasting his name on her lips but not founding any bitterness. There was no fear in her voice, not even a hint of mockery. “Thank you for saving me ten years ago.”

Since then, she came to him almost every day. Days turned to weeks. Weeks turned to months. He found himself wanting more. A mere talk is not enough. He wished to be closer to her. He yearns to feel the warmth of her skin against his hand. To taste her soft lips against his. To see himself through her eyes.

But everything he wished for is the death of her. Sometimes, you have to let go of love in order to keep it. So he did, he continued loving her from atop a tree while she kept on coming back with her stories. She told him of her dreams, of her fears, of everything that’s keeping her alive. Everyday he learned about her and every day he fell in love.

Love– is it something Death is capable of? How can he feel something that created life? Yet Death has found his heart melting at the mere sight of her smile. He wants her. He wants her heart and all of her. He wants to live again, so he can be with her.

Indeed, he once lived. Although he doesn’t remember most of it, he can clearly remember why he ended it, why he killed himself: he fell in love with death only to find its grip choking him into the oblivion of nothingness. He didn’t find the relief he was yearning for. It was just nothing.

But death exists to take life and he has to take hers. Because death is inevitable, and it will come in any form.

Two huge men came knocking at Erina’s door one evening. Her parents have gone to visit a friend and they’ll be back the next morning. Erina was told never to open the door for strangers but the knocking didn’t stop. It came in urgent pounding until it threatened to unhinge the door. She reached for a knife, the only weapon she wished could save her.

She gasps in fear as the door came flying, allowing the two men to step inside the hut. Erina’s eyes widened at the sight of their malicious grin, their heavily stained teeth showing. She gripped the knife tighter with both hands. She survived the dark forest at the age of eight. She will not die now.

She braced herself as the two lunged at her but before they can even reach her, they turned to ash and disintegrated into the wind. Behind their now gone form, stood Death. He saved her–again.

But Death cannot take life that is not on his list. That is an absolute law and he knows that as well. His hand started turning to ashes–a punishment for his choice. He is no longer Death.

He turned to her, wanting her face to be the last thing he sees–

Life. It took him a century of being Death to fall in love with life. To watch life smile at him. To hear her voice.

But what he saw is far from that. Her face is filled with pain as she watched him slowly fading. She didn’t make any sound as tears never stopped falling from her eyes. She walked to him, reaching for a first and last embrace. Even in death, he found warmth. He found life.

How he wished to find love after death. To experience everything for the first time. But how he wished it was never this soon.

“How ironic is it to live because of Death,” she whispered in a failed attempt of humor.

For the last time, Death smiled.

“How ironic is it for Death to fall in love with life.

To fall in love with you.”
